I thought I'd share our gardening projects for this fall...
Project #1 Winter Gardening
First you dig a hole
about 16 inches deep
and put in about 12 inches of green manure.
Yes, Cleo, manure! (It's free)
You can also use greens torn out from the garden,
if you prefer.
Cover with several inches organic compost and plant.
We put in seeds for romaine, chard, kale, beets and spinach.
To finish it off, place lids with hard plastic or glass and open only infrequently -
to water and harvest. Theoretically, you can keep your spring and fall veggies
happy and growing all winter long! (That 's what we hope.)
These plastic domes should keep the hearty chard alive too!
Here is our master carpenter, constructing our new boxes - Thanks, Rober!
The wood is thanks to Sharon and her old deck.
Project #2
Our new organic, practically weed free gardens
start out with a good 1/2" layer of non-slick newsprint, right on the soil.
Joseph is a great sport!
After the paper is a layer of pine needles
and leaves - piled high!
Followed by a top layer of rich organic mulch.
Don't dig it in. Just let it sit on top.
In the spring it will be ready to plant!
And, yes, I try to get out my unicycle once a year,
just to see if I can.
Count me good for another year!
